There is not any fix rule about it,but normaly target one main key word for one page and in content u can add another 3-4 more keyword which are not more competative.for individual there is different view for targeting a keywords in a single page.

For me the ideal number is 2 keywords per page. They can be comfortable placed in the <title> and the <h1>...<h4> tags.

But this whole thing depands on the number of the competitors.

Do You mean that don't repeat a keyword on a single page more than 3 times? or Do You suggest that not to optimise 3 pages for the same keywords?

Thanks for the answer but i can't agree.

The density counts, not the repetition.

I suggest to repeat a keyword at least 5 times (including <h1>..<h4>) on a page, if it doesn't exceed the 10% keyword density, and do not repeat more than 3 times in the alt tags.

i m not agree with you, there is not any rules like that dont repeat any keyword more than 3 times, but you have to take care of that keyword density.u can use that keyword more than 3 times but keyword density should be less that 6-8%.

I usually use 1 primary keyphrase and two secondary keyphrases per page, also ensure that you have approximately 4 other related phrases for your primary and 2 related phrases per secondary keyphrase, I usually end up referencing a thesaurus to find related terms or Wordtracker gives you options for this.

lets say I know that i want to target one word for a page. would it better to add that one word to my meta tag or will it not a make a difference if I add more (like 5 or 6)? Is it better to have less keywords in your meta tags?

see, if u target one keyword for your one page for exp. your targated keyword is buy flower ok.that you can write your description like " buy flower online in blabla city, you can buy flower from our online flower shop.... " in this way u can write your meta description,it should be long as 18-20 word.and one more thing, if u targeting another 2-3 keyword that are not more important, than u can write something in content which cover that keywords.meta keyword tag can be same for all the pages coz most search engines are not considering meta keyword tag now a days, but meta descreption should be different for each page which cover that targeted keywords.i think now it is clear.:)

if lots of keywords are there than u have to decide which keywords are more important,a'ter that take each one and create saperate webpage for that.
i.e your main targated k/w are buy flower, flower online, australian flower,
than make pages like buy-flower.html,flower-online.html, and optimize each page by targating that keyword only.

So, your frontpage can have loads, and then subpages are more specific?

not like that, see if your domain name is www.abcxyz.com than in your front page index.html it is advisable to target abcxyz keywords.i think now it is clear.
