Do you focus in on a few or do you have a whole bunch you work on or do you just try to work on your site as a whole? I have a handful of search terms I really want to get and don't know if I'd be better to tackle them one at a time or all at once. What's your thoughts?
it is always best to keep number of keywords to promote minimal as concentration is very important. However, I watch many keywords as possible , if I see my site doing good on that kw, I also add that kw to prior ones if its worth it.
i would work hard on one, then put different anchors on the others once im ranked well for my principal
I always (where possible) target two keywords for one webpage (not website, but webpage). For the root domain, I target mainly one, but then I add up to 10 over time.
i use normally 5 to 10 keywords and maximum is 25, from which 5 are always for testing new ideas/keywords. but still i believe if i have a high pr like 6/+, then i will start adding links to a maximum of 50/page. but i have only 3/+
• When writing up a new page, I use WordTracker to isolate anywhere from 2-5 of the most relevant keywords. • As an ongoing strategy for the whole website, I use Digital Point's Tracker to follow those keywords/phrases that (per WordTracker) get at least 25 daily searches (currently about 70 KWs). That enables me to see which specific keywords are ranking well. That in turn gives me some hints for new anchor text, using those keywords which are relevant, as I continue to secure backlinks to those pages.
I'm assuming you mean 5 per page. That would be OK (5 max, probably) For a whole website, that would be way too small. My website, for example, has nearly 150 handwritten pages, each one with completely unique content. I have to target a group of keywords for each of those pages. Without well-researched and SEO'd keywords uniquely relevant to your inner pages, you will not get many (if any) high search engine rankings for those inner pages. We all want direct SE traffic to our inner pages, and that comes only by optimizing each page for its relevant keywords. For a medium to large site, you will be working with hundreds of KWs.
Commonly I target between 2-5 keywords per page at the start and then once my site has gained some momentum in the search engines I typically will target more keywords. Depending on the page and visitor behavior, I may change my keyword targets. I also like to mention, it really doesn't matter how many keywords as long as you are targeting the right keywords. I tend to target broad keywords -- because broad keywords are highly searched, but I also target long-tail keywords (4 or more keywords combined) because long tail keywords will have you ranking for many variations of keyword phrases.
I would say do all the keywords you're talking about, but be sure to optimize no more than one root keyword for any given webpage. So if you have 6 main uniquely-themed keywords you're optimizing, there should be 6 different web page that you are optimizing, one for each keyword.
