Try to find the key words that will convey the meaning of this whole content. There may be one or more. Also think what you would type in the search engine's text box to find for your content. Use these words as keywords in your site.

Are those number of keywords are optimized when you are building backlinks?

Just a lame question, does it really makes sense if I choose and put 15 keywords on a blog post without optimizing most of them? =P

Always start with 5 keywords and gradually move on to 40 keywords.

I focus on a very small group of general, high competition keywords. I find that optimizing for the top automatically optimizes for the "low hanging fruit" and tons of other related keywords I couldn't have thought of.

good point, however high competition words can be very difficult to rank in depending on the niche that you're in.

7-10 keywords are the maximum you can focus on at once. 70% of keywords should be of high competition and 30% should be of medium competition keywords so that your website can get ranked easily. If you get ranking on those keywords, go to other keywords.

I am not talking about a blog but thousands to be honest, we have so many and then with variations of each it is literally thousands.

When tweaking stuff I will pick what's relevant for that page obviously.
