    I guess it’s a stupid question but I’ll ask it anyway. How many <h1> tags should be used on the homepage?

    Best wishes,

    Only use 1 <h1> but you can use as many <h2>'s that you want.

    hmm, 1 use 1 h1, a few h2, and a bit more h3. no h4 or h5 ...

    I thought i read somewhere you will get penalised if you use too many of these h.

    Except for H1, the more Hx's the better -- and every Hx should contain some variant of your target keyword.

    Really Nystul?

    If that’s accurate then I’m probably in trouble as I’ve developed my homepage with <h1>, 2, 3, 4 and then h2 again.

    Can someone overuse <h> tags to the point where they become penalized and if so, how and is my usage of <h> tags considered overuse?

    Thanks,
    Kimmy

    As long as you use them in a sensible way for making some titles and sub-titles bigger than the standard text then you will be fine.

    Start using them purely for seo and you may run into problems.

    tips:

    this is somthing that toke me a while to find , you might need it for your CSS:

    h1,h2,h3 {
    margin-bottom: -1px;
    }

    keep that in mind:
    Title~ Meta description ~ Meta keywords ~ H1 ~ H2

    for the bottom if you want to use a htag you should use h3 h4 or even h5 but not h1 :)

    Think of it this way. Google has historical info on millions of sites, and knows exactly what % of sites use heading tags as well as the quality of such sites and their other characteristics.

    I would be willing to bet that a disproportionate amount of SEOs are using them as compared to the "average" site. Thus being an easy way an algo can flag a site as being highly SEO'ed or better yet, "unnatural". Something like overuse of heading tags will undoubtedly "popout" using statistical analysis of website layout properties.

    That being said, this one thing probably won't hurt you, but will be a piece of "evidence" in the algo's watch for possible spam that combined with other 'unnatural' factors could.

    Just a thought I might provide an alternative response to the "traditional seo" viewpoint.

    Just create your pages with content naturally. Easy to read and follow for your visitor.

    hi kimmy :)

    yes it is possible to overuse <h> tags but if you only use them for headings then it shouldn't really be a problem. The only time people get penalized is when they have whole paragraphs between the <h> tags.

    I only really tend to use one <h1> for the main headings and the all <h2> for the subheadings, i rarely use below <h3>

    I try and use one <h1>, two <h2> per page followed however many <h3> tags I may need. Although this is just preferance. I also rarely have need for <h4> or higher.

    I am bringing back this good ol' topic :)

    Should an <Hx> automatically be associated with content under it? And should an H2 always fall under an H1? Is is possible to get penalized for misusing these css tags?
