How many directory submits will bring results

Marketing is new to me, learning a lot from fellow members at DP. I am taking one step at a time since I don't know all the rules. Recently I learned about the directory submission. I got convinced that it will bring some good results in the long run.
I submitted to 3 directories for the site http://www.webcosmo.com :
    2yi.net
    v7n.com
    dirspace.com

All paid directories. I am looking forward to submit to more. Now question is how many directories I should submit to. Since I have to spend money, I cant do for too many. Some suggestions please.

Best keep within your budget, but ensure that your program is pretty continuous spread over 3 months periods at a time :)

Try target around 1000 over the 3 month period, and try keep costs down by finding some free directories too, but be selective

    well trust me
three aint gonna do it :)

spend as much as you can afford on submitting to paid directories and couple that with free directoy submissions and possibly other forms of gaining backlinks such as template sponsorship and article syndication

Here you can find the Strongest Directories on the net. Only one directory is missing from there --thats mine ( have not yet asked Jeff to list it as the tool is not working):p (Shameless self-promotion:p)

Submit to all those directories and also my very strong Best Internet Resource Directory. If you use that list --you will get results within one month.

Don't forget to submit to my directory first though --:p:D

I think you should go for any directory submission service and spend some money to submit to as many as 1000 to 2000 free directories and I should say something here. There are a lot of directory submission services out there and almost all of them quote "quality" yet there price is as low as $50 to $80 for a 1000 project. Remember for that kind of price no one can offer "1000 QUALITY SUBMISSION". They just advertise like that.

Try to cover top 30-40 directories.

I experimented with one of my sites. I just submitted to 3-4 top directories and did not build any other links. I was pretty satisfied with the results after 2-3 months.

Don't waste your money on the lesser known directories.. the cost/benefit ratio is less favorable for such directories.

If you are confused between a few directories, try to go for one that is less cluttered.

Give preference to deep link directories.

Also try to find if there are any good niche directories, suitable for your site.

Of course, you can submit to free directories.. free links are always welcome :).

The same question been asked by my client to me, the answer is just the same as above.

They always hope to get the result at the short time. Dir submission is just like you seed your site, it will take a time to see the result. At least wait until 3 months before it take effect your site position.

williamjack made a good point, submitting to few good directories will bring much better results then submitting to hundreds of free ones.
does it mean we can less worry about submitting on free ones??

I think you have not read my post properly and followed the link.

There was an experiment regarding the effectiveness of Free directories VS Quality paid directories.

In the experiment -5 high quality paid directories outranked 700 Free directories. Please read HERE and draw your own conclusions.:)
