Joomla is very easy to install but hard to configure. That’s my way of seeing it. I wanted to make it into a type of blog directory but found that there is very limited information on how to configure Joomla.

joomla can be a pain in the ass in the beginning, but the forums are great for resolving problems. Most answers can be found there, or if not post your questions, and someone usually answers relatively soon.

If you take a look at the hosting site in my sig you will see I'm definately an avid Joomla user :) Have a couple hundred sites running on it that I help administer.

For those looking for a great SEF option check out www.open-sef.org. More actively developed than 404 SEF and I've found it to be less CPU intensive.

We have many sites PR6 and PR7 and for some keywords we target we've got the top 3 results (smaller keywords like joomla hosting with just under 2m results).

Been using Mambo since 4.5 was still in beta and haven't been disappointed yet.

    I have a site FOR Joomla :)

    Joomlaspan

My hobby is to make Open Source module and templates for Joomla and Mambo. So far, Joomlaspan has released more than 6 modules, including Google AdSense module in two editions, Google Referral Module, Firefox Referral Module, Google Translation Module and Chitika eMiniMalls Module. All are available for free download on the site.

Joomla is not primarily a blog system, though you can technically blog with it. If you just want a simple blog, use Wordpress.

Use Joomla for more complex content management needs.

Joomla doesn't let people post comments on your blog entries, nor does it "ping". Other than that it'll be fine - but a bit like using a sledgehammer to break open a teeny nut.

    I'd always blog with WordPress

I gave Joomla! a look a while ago. Its advantages were obvious, but I was out of my depth.

Last night I installed it again with an eye towards managing an arcade site with it.

We'll see how that goes. [gulp!]

/never done a games site before
//never used a CMS other than WP
///really hope I can figure this out!

I have also installed Joomla on my new site, but I am having some troubles customising the template. Perhaps I have not mastered CSS as well as I originally thought.

I absolutely LOVE! Joomla. I use it on most of my sites with large amounts of content. I personally run PepsiFireworks.com, F-150.com, & Outer Banks.net (Ugly, while I re-template) on Joomla. However, that's not all my sites. I work with Mosets HotProperty (a Joomla component) for Rental & Home Sales, I use Open SEF for some SEF sites, there's a multitude of Directory components (like DMOZ or Yahoo's directory) for Joomla. And if it doesn't exist yet, someone is working on it (although it may never be finished, because people to like to create Vapor-JoomlaWare).

My best past-times are writing Joomla hacks, like I just finished one last to show in the "Who's Online" whether a Spider-bot is on the site. And with Joomla's extremely flexible API, it's not hard at all. I've also written RSS Newsreaders for Joomla (RSSinc), as well as a webcam component (finishing that up), multitude of templates (some bad, some better), hacks for HotProperty (image slideshow hack, Meikeric on the Mosets forums)... I can't even remember everything I've done with Joomla. Oh another cool one I did, was a component for Tower locations. It was for a tower company (cannot disclose unfortunatly), but it used the Google Maps API and stored all the FCC tower specs in the database. It also used a zipcode -> long/lat coordinate geolocation and you could search within a certain distance of a particular zip/city/longlat and find a particular tower. Pretty neat. We're working on SEO with that site right now.

All in all, I LOVE JOOMLA!

If anyone ever has questions about Joomla, feel free to PM me.
    Mike

I first started with WordPress and I found the learning curve pretty easy.
I noticed that what I had in mind for the site wasn't going to work with WordPress, or at least it would take major hacking. So I switched to Joomla. It was said earlier that Joomla is an easy install but a pain to master. One look at my site and you will see that I most definately have NOT mastered it yet.

As I gain more knowledge about Joomla, the more I like it.

    There are many components like
    1. OpenSef
    http://www.opensef.org
    Code (markup):
This is opensource and thus free
    2. CoreSef - Core Sef hack from one of the core developers works like a charm.
    3. Sef Advance - If you have the money Go for it, its the best one out there
    http://www.swik.net
    Code (markup):
And as far as I know, there is no module that can do the sef job :)
    God Bless
