Right sorry this question isn't directly for me but wanted others opinion on the matter. Anyway the question is for a new blogger how many posts should he do a day, siince everyone is talking about once i've been indexed i need to keep updating my blog?

Now in my view i think to begin with before you even think about getting indexed you need 15+ posts of very high quality. Now when it comes to updating i would recommend 5-10 per week for a new blogger. And after a few weeks just drop it down to about 3-4 per week.

The reason i asked is because i heard some crazy advice given, that you should be doing 20 per week for at least 6 months. Is this just a crazy fool or having i been getting it wrong?

Its not important that how many blog posts you do in a day but it depends quality of your blog posts (writing). One can go for anywhere between 5-7 in a week. Important thing is you need to update your blog regularly so visitors come there to see which new things you have added there so good for traffic.

i think the ule of thumb is 5-7 posts a week. I try to post daily on the main blog and at lest 3 times a week on my others.

I think the question should be how many a week. I personally don't feel more than 1 a day is needed. But like always quality content is far more important than quantity

It is important that you stick to a schedule, no matter what that is, or as in my case, I update whenever there is new information, sometimes that means 2-3 different posts a day, and sometimes I may skip a day.
As long as your readers know that you will update frequently ad there won't be gaps of days where there isn't a new post, you should be fine.
Just as important is the quality of the content, many people start out like race car driver the first few weeks, and then run out of things to blog about, or run dry on their expertise of a particular niche and they are soon doomed after that.

The blogging graveyard is full, and continues to add more bodies by the hundreds.

Blog posting frequency is not so important. I post about once a week but my posts appear in the Google results about 10 minutes after posting usually.

For me, the main benefit of posting is link-building. On average I pick up about 3 links - usually from auto blogs linking to the post - for every post I make. So 1 post every few days/ 1 week lets me build up links at a decent rate.

The above posts are good answers, but I want to add more.

Assuming that your posts are of good quality and contain rich keywords, posting frequequncy for me is only important if you only have a few of them.

But as you go along, one can reduce it gradually to focus more on promotion. Content is useless if no one reads them.

As they say, 80% promotion is good enough.

If you have a few blogs to post on then post daily if you can, thats if you have no other online responsibilities.

If you have one blog and nothing else to take care of then id post 1 - 2 times daily.

If time is an issue id say 2 - 3 posts weekly would be fine.

As a minimum, one post a week would be acceptable.

See i hear what you are all saying and yes promotion is the key. Personally though i think you need to have something worth promoting first.

A couple times in the week is good enough. You do not want to over do it, or under do it.

Quantity is not the major factor but quality.
Ensure the quality and weekly 3~7 posts are good enough

The exact number may vary according to your niche, talent and knowledge.

You should make the exact number of posts that it takes to add quality content to your site at a steady rate, but not so much that you end up adding "fluff" information that is of no value to the readers that visit there.

    How's that?

I think the best thing you can do is write as many as you want... but save the rest as drafts. It'll give you something to pull out when you can't think of anything else :)

Or if you're all full for a long time, things to stick back in the archives a bit (assuming it's just for search results).
