how many backlinks

I started a site several months ago and today yahoo site explorer says it has just over 100 backlinks, but it is still hovering page 12 and page 15 of the google search results for my target keyword. The sites on page 1 only have around 125 links, how long does it take for my page rank to get better?

    What is your target keyword?

Also, it depends on quality filled content.

You could use a site like BacklinkForums.com to get a list of DoFollow sites to drop your link onto. This way you are sure they will pass link juice, and they will also be content related which will help your site out in the serps. Good luck!

It will depend on the quality content on the site also. Just keep working on backlinks and create unique content. It won't be long before you start seeing some progress.

the quality of your back-links also matters. Domain age also seems to play a role search engine rankings. There other factors not just backlinks.

I used to wonder about the same thing until I realized that in order to outrank sites and get my stuff to page 1 I needed to get relevant content, relevant keywords in the domain name, your target keywords in anchors and backlinks coming from high PR sites.

When I say "relevant" I mean.. you won't outrank a site whose domain name is LAdentist.com for the keyterm "LA dentist" if both the competitor and the competing site owners use the same techniques and your domain + content are skewed towards los angeles dentist. If you want to know just how relevant your site is for a particular keyword just run a quick adwords campaign and check the quality score :)

If your site/content is relevant and you know for sure what your keywords are then... focus on getting high pr backlinks as well as edu and gov

Have you considered all other onsite and offsite seo factors? Backlinks are just one. Like many people have said theres a lot of things to look out for.

    Content
    Domain age
    proper h1 tags
    Title Tags
    kw density
    size of site
    link "popularity"
    load time
    kw competition

    and many more

IT depends upon targeted keywords........The Page rank increases based on the number of back links you have and the domain age.

I agree with Kiranraj here, If you want to increase pr you need to get good quality links from high pr sites.
