I've noticed that directory submission don't get many backlinks. Some links are burried in page 10 or something so search engines don't see it. Some directories won't approve your link.

Some people are offering directory submission to 280 sites. Does it worth? How many backlinks have you got after those directory submission?

Don't count DMOZ and sites which copy DMOZ :), DMOZ is worthy.

I would say its worth it because even you get submitted to 30-40% of them its still very good. Also, you have to remember that the price many of these charge is very reasonable.

i personally think directories are a waste of time, even thoug hthere backlinks, they are bad backlinks of trashy sites, spammy sites etcc
majority of the time it does more bad than good

In my opinion, human edited diretories are not full of trashy and spammy sites, especially the directories announced on this forum. The majority of them are quality, search engine friendly directories. The ones that are full of spam sites are easy to detect and I don't submit to them. Also, why do you think they are bad backlinks? In my case, I have acquired many one-way backlinks on pr 3 & 4 pages through directory submissions. How can you go wrong with that? They have helped my site get top 10 rankings in google for many keyword phrases. Also, today's PR0 directory can be tomorrow's PR6 directory.

Directories are okay in my book. ;)

One my site has very good position (9th) in SERPs for very competivive phrase after 6 months of submission to all free directories that I can find. I think that links in directories have still good value.

I do not agree with statment. I rank #1 for a pretty competive keyword (seattle website design company) and 95% of those links come from my own directory. Directory links work great if you know how to optimize.

banless, "seattle website design company" isn't so competetive term as some others one and two word terms people optimize for.

When I started my pages, I didn't know so much about SEO, that means that my pages are not good SEO optimized. Submission to free dirs helped me with backlinks count and also a little bit increase my traffic. For me it was not a waste of time

I submit my new site to many directories, and still waiting for backlinks. I don't really know it works or not. I did this just because I have no better choice.

I have learnt the hard way. Most directory submission offers are crap in value. The links go so deep they end up with no value at all. LOL. I remember one submission I fell for that offered 19 PR7 directories. Unfortunately for me my links were buried 7 levels down on PR0 pages. I could do nothing but laugh heartily at wasting my money.

    Col :)

Yahoo and MSN count all those links, even the ones buried 10 pages deep. Google likely see's them too. They just don't report it.

Directory submissions alone can get you decent rankings for moderately competitive terms. Time consuming but it works, providing you submit to a few hundred directories.

To get the most out of your submissions pay for a featured listing in some. If you see that a free submission will put you way back on page 10 then pay for a featured spot on page 1, if that page has PR and the featured link is not expensive. There are many that are $5 or less. Also some directories sort the listings by PR and in many cases a PR4 will get you on page 1. So even if your not a PR 4 yet, work on it, then your listing in that directory will eventually move up to page 1 or 2 and pass more weight.

But you'll need to submit to at least 200 directories to see the benefit. And it will take months before you see the results. Many free directories take weeks, or months before they review and approve the link. Then you'll need to wait till the SE bots re-crawl those pages, which could take another month.

I think if you get less than 5 backlinks from directory submission, you must be doing something badly wrong, like not bothering to read any of the directory guidelines, or having a MFA site.
