how many backlinks does it take for google to flag your site?

i'm new to SEO, so i have no idea. i've been joining forums, adding my link to the profile and to the signature, making some posts, and going to the next forum (or blog).

i've been doing all this manually, and only for a day, and have done this roughly to 5 websites.

i don't wanna get flagged, so how many links in a short period of time (say a week), would it take for google to say, hey, you're doing malicious stuff, we're flagging you!

It depends on a number of factors. It generally takes an abnormally large number of links (in comparison to the current number of links you have) within the space of a short time to get penalized. It would be easier for this to happen to a new site as well, if you have a set number of links (say 50) and that suddenly doubles or trebles in a day then it may get flagged. However if you've got an old site with thousands of backlinks, then the same number of links generated in a day probably wouldn't get you flagged and penalized, as it wouldn;t look so abnormal. I would say you just have to be sensible and use your judgement.

It depends on what you mean by penalized.

    Think about this...

If you throw a couple of thousand links at your competitors website do you think Google will penalize them? If so, SEO companies would spend more time sinking their competition. There is a reason they don't - it just doesn't work that way.

Your site won't get penalized by a lot of links - it just might not help at all. Of course the way you describe is really not a lot of links. The fact that you are doing it manually makes it somewhat natural anyway.

As Matt Cutts said, generally they don't penalize sites for getting large amount of back-links, if you are creating all these back-links with guanine way then don't worry keep building back-links.

    Hello,

Here is the thing... these guys are right, it is extremely hard to get your website penalized for excessive back-links. For example I built about 500,000 links in the span of a week, only having about a 50,000 link to start. My website was not banned, however it did take a while for all these links to take effect.

    Best Regards,
    Nick

Yea, google says it will never penalize your site for link building because it would be to easy for competitors to knock you out of the rankings. Not saying that if they see unnatural link growth that they wont let those links help your ranking until the age and appear to be good and natural links.
