It's impossible to get exactly number of backlink. How can I find that? Google algorythm is a myth. You should use your experiment to see how to archive your ranking. SEO is always help but Over SEO is penalized!

No number has been defined by Google. But your backlinks should be from good neighborhoods & the anchor texts should not be same. Google hates the paid links. Build you links manually.
