Right now i'm at a PR2. How many backlinks do I need to bump up to the next PR level?

Forgive me, i'm new at this...

It's not about quantity but about quality. A single link from a good, related, high PR site is enough to increase your PR.

What's consider a high PR? 5 and above? Do they have to be relevant to your site?

Yup a higher PR could be considered as 4 or above.
The PR which is given by a site to you also depends on the number of outbounds on that site.

For a general guide you can look at the Yahoo column in www.xenyo.com/seotools/history.php .. Its obviously more accurate with PR4-5 or above as its taken from real data.

Sometimes even a single link has bumped me to the next level and sometimes it hasn't.

Depends on the quality and relevancy.

Generally a 5 and higher would be considered a high PR. If you could get a few of 5,6s,7s from a related site, your PR will be around a 4-5 in the next update.

The PR depends on more variables than how many back links you have. Not even just the PR of the page that links back to you. Just as the posters above mentioned - the quality of the site and the page linking back - even how many other back links that site/page gives. It is one thing getting a link back from a PR7 directory which links back to 5,000 other sites and getting a back link from a good PR 6 site that has a lot less back linking overall.

And there are many other variables included - if the algorithm was as easy as counting how many back links and their relevancy - people would have find a way to abuse it already.

Better if they do, but the others could work to. You can get PR5 with links PR5 and PR6 but it all depends of they strenght (less outbound, more good content etc...).

You need to have a higher PR backlink which is a qualitative one and relevant to your site.

Don't spend too much time on PR, just optimise the site for better traffic .

I agree that quality backlinks will increase your PR. But I would suggest that don't bother yourself getting high PR. Concentrate more on getting high traffic and getting more links.

If your site is new avoid PR7 links. Google is smart enough to know you bought it. Why would a 8 year old established PR7 site link to a noname PR2 with little content UNLESS there was money involved? I'd get lots of PR4-5 maybe a PR6 in there. Wait until next update then upgrade.

    Finkstar - PR10 google.com/statcounter.com/whitehouse.gov

I love page rankers ... wouldn't even bother about the green bar! - worry about keyword content in the site, make it fresh, make it read well.

PR10 is the highest but I believe it works in becoming INCREASINGLY difficult to climb.

    PR1 easy
    PR2 still easy
    PR3 slightly harder
    PR4 not so easy
    PR5 Getting up there
    PR6 Nice Job
PR7 You got it going on
    PR8 You Loco!
    PR9 Who are you!?
    PR10 Perfection.

Try to build more than 10,000 and you can obtain a PR but do it slowly and carefully.
