How many added links a week is dangerous?

I really want to crank up my sites SEO. I am ranked #12 for a term and i was thinking about doing ~500 submissions for it. Of course, not all will get approved.

At the same time, I am building links with other terms. ~500 in the same week.

Is this risky or am I still in safe water ?

I am worried about google penalizing me.

500 backlinks is not at all risky. But either way would try to make the anchor a bit more colorful ;) (read: not all 500 to have same anchor in links, but rather something like 70-80%)

500 a week is nothing, 5,000 a day is where you should start worrying about too many links at once ;)

"I am worried about google penalizing me."

Google will not penalize sites for getting too many backlinks.

If google penalize; then people will start to build thousands of backlinks for their competitors in order to get them penalized.

The worst that can happen is that, Google will ignore those back links.

Ranking won't pay your bills - only traffic that converts will. So why would you limit your incoming links? Scared of a Search Engine Penalty? Here is food for thought? Are you getting any quality links (Is anyone visiting your site from all the links you are getting?).

If you only chase links for Search Engine Rank you play a very risky game. Search Engines can flip on a dime. I'll take real links with real traffic any day over an attempt to manipulate search rankings from links.

It's not true that you need 1,000's of links to rank high. But it is true you need links of high quality.

Go out and get 1,000 links from crappy sources, have those links get caught in a Search Engine Ranking filter - then how do you get rid of them?

I've paid money to people on this forum to do primarily directory submissions and I've ranked #1 and #2 for my target terms. but there are some longer tailed terms I want to rank for that are #12 or so. I just wanted to pump these up..

If you're thinking of directory submissions, I'd probably hold off at this point and instead concentrate on getting some quality inbound links.

I haven't heard anybody getting penalized for building 500 back links a week...
You're doing fine with that :)

Directories are good only if they are relevant to your niche.

    Zero.

Build no links and thus get no rankings, no visitors, no clients.

    Exactly.

You may create as many as you can. You should create as many as you could, preferably relevant, diversified sources, authority sites.

500 is not to many. Google is just wanting white hat SEO .......they want everything fair.
