Check this proxy site for example, http://iliketosurf.com/

I was told by someone that Google allows a max of :
    3 ad unit
    3 link unit
    3 referral unit
    2 search box

To my knowledge I thought you could only use 3 of any unit, period.

Does anyone know the answer for sure?

Yes, you may place up to three link units on a page, in addition to the three standard ad units, two search boxes and one video unit you're permitted to display. Just make sure the page complies with their program policies.

You can use three ad unit and three link unit in one page but I experience tells me that none of the ad will pay much. If you have too many ads, none pay much. Have only a few and they pay good.

If you are shooting for max google ads you might want to becarefull with those numbers especially on a smaller page with not so much content. It can be a turn off and discourage visitors.

If you have a large page with a lot of content you might be able to squeeze a few others in there.

All up to you, but I don't know that adding more ads makes a visitor anymore likely to click on any of them. And at some point they might say man forget this site.

Unless you are slapping up a few pages with the intent not to monitor and update them much anyway, and the sole purposes is just for google adsense.
