Hey. I have to say I'm pretty uneducated when it comes to servers so I'm hoping one of you technically gifted people could help me out. I am currently writing a business plan for a business which I plan to host on my developer's server with the following specs given to me by the host: Dedicated Server - PHP 5.0/MySQL 5.0 - Full External Library Support - Intel P4 3.2 Ghz Hyper Threading - 1024 MB Dedicated RAM - 80 GB of Disk Space - 500 GB Data Transfer (Bandwidth) - Web Control Panel - Web-based Email Services - Unlimited Email Accounts - Unlimited FTP Accounts - 99.9% Uptime Guarantee - Firewall Enabled for Advanced Security Now the site I am planning on building is a cross between facebook and ebay. Each member has a profile and then each member's items have their own individual profiles (maybe assume they have about 5 items each?) There is no video data on the profiles which are quite simplistic and contain a few photos and mainly text. I dont know if that helps much. Basically what I'm interested in knowing is approximately how many members would I need to get before getting another server? And what exactly does this 'bandwidth' mean i.e. how many ppl could be on the site at once. Even a really really rough figure would do since I dont know where to start. Cheers
Bandwidth and how many people can be on the site at the same time are two different things. The server itself is a low budget server, I guess you could take a few hundred profiles on it, or maybe thousands depending on your website and how active it is.
500 gb bandwidth is low for a dedi server. As I understand, your site will use some sort of db. At 1at 1024 ram, if you become popular, your site may be sluggish.
Yes the bandwidth is low... also your hard drive is low. Get SCSI or SATA drives... at least 250 Gig and mirror them.
