How long was it before you started earning?

I know nobody starts earning from marketing in their first week, or even in their first month. But how long did it take you to start earning? A month? 3 months? 6 months? Or was it much longer?
Did you make any mistakes along with way? Would you have not been successful had it not been for one thing or another?

There's an unspoken rule of thumb that says that it may take up to 2 years to develop a profitable online business. Now, I don't know if it's true or not, but I am in my second year and I am finally beginning to experience the benefits of our hard work (me and my team).

I guess, there are people that can hit it big from the start, for the rest of us it's the magical two-year mark.

In my first few months of internet marketing I made money. The internet has many avenues for income. There's fiverr, ebay, amazon, elance, freelancer. If you aren't making any money right now try selling on fiverr, its literary a gold mine.

I only started making money through my website after 6 months. It was a tough 6 months, because i had to continue to drive traffic to my site without the motivation of seeing the cash come in. But about 6 months into it and with my mentor's guidance and a complete online business guide, i made my first $1000. :) and have been making money ever since. :)
So just don't give up and with time and the right steps, you'll make it big!

It all depends on what skills you have and how much time you put into it. Also, it depends on how much traffic one can generate to their site. If one has done their foundation work well, it's not long before one can see some income coming in. It's possible to make full time income online!

Well I must admit that i made my first $52 after hard working for over 8 months. However, to earn that $52 I wasted over $400 on different ebooks, courses etc. I finally made is by selling my domain name on ebay in 2007.

My motivation is to live a better and more comfortable life. To give my future wife. (Now girlfriend) a better life she deserves. I don't want her to suffer a life of poverty, but instead enjoy a life of luxury. :)

Seems like a good enough reason. But what if your girlfriend had left you?

It took me nearly 7 years (counting all the time I'd taken to buid up skills, etc.) - it's a daily struggle to always find the next thing and keep evolving. I'm still looking for different niches all the time.

It took me two years to start making money from my sites, that's true. But before that, I started making money almost instantly by freelancing. I still do both as freelancing brings the money in for food, bills and such - it's the money I can count on. Then there is money from my sites, this is more like a bonus, although some months it'b more than the freelancing money.

No, I didn't post every day and I still don't. Sometimes I only post once a month to keep my sites going, I guess I'm lazy.

I think this depends on how you define earning. You can get started generating the first cash pretty soon but of course you will have to invest and also recover what you really invested.

So I would go with the option that it will take you up to 2 years to really break the line and start earning money.

Maybe that's why it took you 2 years to be successful?

The 2 year mark is not set in stone. However, it is important to understand that anything internet related will take time to saturate it. And it is not an overnight process. Even if, let's say, your online business offers great products or services you will not be able to communicate that to thousands or maybe millions of people unless a certain amount of time has passed. Once your business gets a decent following, customer base, returning customers, etc. you will begin to experience what some would call real success. Can it happen in 6 months? I think it can, but realistically it will take more than that.

I don't think so. Things that go viral can result in overnight processes... so if your business model was viral, then you could have success overnight.
