How long to update 301?

    Hello,

I recently changed my domain name, I used a 301 redirect on all pages to forward onto the new domain - the directory and file structure was kept identical. Google currently has indexed pages for both sites now and my old domain is still ranking high on my keywords but i believe my new domain will rank higher than that. How long will it take for the indexes to change over?

Also, do backlinks to my old domain still count?

    Thanks!

I think it takes about a month to 6 weeks to fullr reindex the changes. Theoretically, pr should be passed through the 301s so you should get some link juice passed across with links still in place to the old domain

It all depends. Remember you can set the crawl rate in the Google webmasters tools.

Don't change crawl rate at webmaster... They want to be in control so let them do it themselves.
Secondly, the moment you stop re-directing your new domain will stop getting pr juice as all the links go to old domain thus you need to re-direct them as well (which is not possible). Thus keep it the way it is now and start SEO for your new domain.

Agree with Super Reds. Unless your domain is super trusted you should wait about a month. Some link juice is passed but try contacting webmasters and change some links if possible. I've done this few times and no problems so far.

Changing of link will help you but if you can do it, let the process take its own time as making hurry in it may create some problem. It will take about a month buddy, just wait and watch.

It should take between 6 weeks to 6 months from my experienced. If you do 301 redirect page by page then it could help your redirect faster. However, if you have thousands page then it would be much harder to get it done manually.

For one page on my site to get fully redirected in google, it was about 10 - 14 days. I was redirecting /index.php to the html root /

On my site the /index.php file had about 800 inbound links. So I added a 310 redirect to the htaccess file to 301 redirect /index.php to the / root. I was using my google webmaster tools to keep an eye on things. I guess it was about a week and a half, to around 2 weeks all of the inbound links had been redirected to the html root.

For a whole site? It seems that google does a deep crawl every 2 weeks. So it might not find all of your inbound links for 4 - 6+ weeks. Maybe 2 or 3 deep crawls.
