Search results pages keep changing all the time, even once every day. There is no fixed time frame to see the results. My answer is to allow for a decent amount of time to elapse before considering the keyword results. So for competitive or less competitive keywords, regardless, it should take up to 3-4 months to see any real effect.

    Very much appreciated.

Because I was asked if how long should it take to rank a keyword and I answered based on Google's update period which is ~3 months, hence I did not made a mistake then.

    Thank you.

google is updating all the time. some non-competitive terms may take at little as a week to rank and some competitive terms may take 6-9 months or even more. all depends on how profitable and competitive the keyword is and how fierce the competition is

Ranking depends on various factors. Like age of the domain(check it through whois.sc), age of the website(http://www.archive.org, you will not find new websites into archive), quality of content, use of proper on page activities like keywords linking within the content, H1, H2..., CSS based navigation instead of JS etc. Use articles, PR, SMO etc to increase quality link and try to get related good quality backlinks.

Following the above procedure, a new website with non-competitive terms may take at a 2-3 months and for competitive terms it may take 6-9 months or even a year to get ranking. For a old domain and website non-competitive terms may take at a month or two and for competitive terms it may take 4-6 months.

Now a days SERPs in Google keep on changing all the time. With more fluctuation in new websites' rankings and a rare shift in ranking for old websites, until unless Google find something naughty in it...

Though it is true that google searches always changes but for very popular keywords it always be high. So if you are selecting most competitive keyword, it will take 3 to 4 months and in low searches keywords you can get results with in 1 month also but all is depends on the off page strategy how it is carrying on.

Choice of keywords depends on site.If site is new.. its better to use less competitive word... And if your site is often crawled, have high PR, and more backlinks.. you can go for high competitive keywords...

For fastest results, you should go for the less competitive keywords and start bringing traffic to your site.
If you take a lot of less competitive keywords and rank, you could bring the equivalent of the highly competitive keywords to your site.
