How long would you say it would take to get a brand new website and domain name in to top page of Google.
I know it depends on how competetive the keywords but ingeneral can you get a site near page one quite quickly.
Also with a webshop how do you keep Google coming back, as there is not much to change on the index page.

i don't how long does it takes
i am also looking for the same thing

    but for
to get the google or any other keep coming to your site
you should keep updating the home page content
and secondly go for a slow link building through free directories
with this the google bot will keep visiting to your site

there is no use of bot to keep visiting unless you update your index page regularly

Thats the thing, with a shop its hard to keep changing the text, but i suppose just re-arraging it with different keyword structures should help do the job?
So i have five main brands of shoes on the site would it be best to optimise the homepage for one brand to help get that higher up then concentrate on another brand?

    as per my opinion
you should target only few keywords
once set you should not change them
if you want to target for any five brands thats ok
optimize the site for those five keywords

i would suggest not to rearrange the content otherwise you won't get the rank that u wish

BTW why do u want the google to come again and again if you don;t want to add more content
anyways if u wish for that create a blog
    domain.com/blog
    and add new content daily
    1 - 2 posts a day
if the bot does not gets the new content everytime than its not going to come again and again
blog can be updated without affecting the home page rank

If you have a brand new site - it will take you around 4 months minimum to get out of the sand box.

You should expect around a 6-8 month timeframe for getting top position in Google, Yahoo and MSN will get there quicker.

I didnt expect to see results overnight and i was just trying to get a timeframe in my head.
I hope six month hard work at seo will pay off.

Here is a trick to keep Google coming back. Put today's date on the front page. Then your content changes daily ;).
