Do you require just coding an existing template, or creating a full blown design and coding?

I could design you a nice layout for your mini site if needed... Also if you have a pre-made layout I could do the edits etc to make you a site within a 5 hour time frame.

It REALLY hinges on how fancy the layout and design is, and how thorough the coder is and how they adhere to standards and cross browser testing. Five hours sounds about right for just a cross-browser template of moderate complexity (I flat rate most of my templates at $100)... Though as geekos noted plugging in the contents shoudn't take too long - though if you HAVE no page copy already prepared and the designer has to hand-hold you or hound you for content, you could be looking at paying for tens of hours of labor.

Without knowing how much content there is, what type of content it is, how it needs to be organized or divided, much less how complex the layout is going to be - one really can't say.

To me, five hours seems a little... short, but I generally don't do projects that are less than $500 a pop.

It can differ a lot. Depending on what you want done and stuff like that. If you want it done cheap, just let me know. I am just getting started with layouts, so I need the practice and don't mind getting paid like $5-$10. I am pretty decent with layouts and I can code it all up for you. ;)

I totally agree with you deathshadow. I have built mini-websites (1 page designs) in 15 minutes and some were built in 15 hours...

There's quite a few different factors that will contribute how long it's going to take to build / design your website.

As we can see from these 2 examples, there are web designers at all different stages of professionalism...

My personal Rate per hour is $20 but I wouldn't touch any web design + coding job under $150

At the end of the day it's your choice PluT0, you can either get your website designed + coded as low as $5 or as much as $500 but don't forget 1 crucial point "You Get What You Pay For".

The student company I work with is cheaper than 99.9% of the companies out there while supplying better quality then many (most of the workers in here are still students, our quality is pretty good for that).

We're doing a 3-4 page site for a small business. There's a team of 4 working on it. We've got 2 weeks. We're charging about $500 where just about every other company in our area would charge at least a few thousand.

Maybe my views are skewed lul.

I don't think you can really judge on number of pages alone. Any company that has a fixed fee per number of pages I'd worry about.

I've done some 4 page sites that were very simple and took a few hours, and some 4 page sites that were infinitely more complex and took many many more hours.

I'm not sure what you're trying to ask there, but if you're asking if I avoid the low paying market. Yes I do, as I can provide a higher level of quality service I automatically charge more.

Pluto, if I were I wouldn't take anybody seriously who can quote you time and prices on the basis of just page count. Bit like asking "I want you to build me a 4 wheel car, How long will it take you and how much it'll cost me?" Best answer I could expect to such a question something like, from $20 (could be a simple toy car with 4 wheels) to $2 millions (a super car). Take your pick...

This is a very accurate analogy. There are nearly infinite options when it comes to building a web site, and it is easy to find quotes for just a few dollars, or for a few thousand dollars. It really depends on your needs and requirements. For 4 pages of static information and simple graphics, or images that you already own it shouldn't take more than a couple of hours to do what you are asking. But if you want dynamic pages with all new original graphics and interactivity then it could be very complex and take dozens if not hundreds of hours to code and design.

Forget the template approach if you are looking to SEO the site. Graphics get in the way of the search engine spiders. Plain = easy to read and understand. Save the wow for the content.
