On average for a site with alot of competition how long do you think it should take to get top ten rankings?

Im going to say it should take about a year for someone with medium SEO experience.

Of course theres some that can get 1st place instantly but i mean more along the lines of something popular.

    Lets say HARRY POTTER

That really depends on your backlinks, anchor text for those backlinks, and what you're up against.

It took me over a year. I'm up against all major corporations. I'm almost at 20k uniques per month.

I went from 5 or 10 uniques to almost 20k uniques a month in a year. Traffic for my niche is also not abundant like some niches (porn, ringtones, shopping, etc)

To beat the high competition on Google, Yahoo or MSN... you need thousands of backlinks from websites that have high PR and related to your site for keyword that you want. This process needs couple months. More competition... more backlinks... to beat the competition!!!

That would depends on how you optimized your site. Everyone has different techniques to be on top of search engine in a short period of time.

    It depends man.

I mean, I have had sites where I targeted a number of some-what competitive terms, getting between 1200-2500 searches a day each according to overture tool.

Now, using basic seo techniques you know, relevant linking, spent about 1500 on permeneant links on some pages and some quality directories (for example botw.org I always submit too, one time fee for 149.99)

I dont do short term projects, all of my sites are in it for years to come so the one time fee is much more valuable then their yearly i think 49.99 a year charge, on the 4th year you will more then break even.

Anyway, im getting off topic. That took about 9 months for this site to rank for its major terms. It was funny, went from not in the top 1000, to number 1 for most of its term all at once , one evening.

Traffic went from 200 or so uniques a day to over 5000.

But now a days I been doing more targeted sites, like instead of a site about Computer Games, I would pick a topic like Flight Simulators for Mac (this is just an example, dont think software would be a good topic lol i like not that compettive ones)

Some keywords, there appears to be no "sandbox" effect, an example, beer pong tables, my friend got his site into the top 10 allinanchor: in the first week, and in the top 40 in the serps in the first month, and in the top 3 by the 3rd. There was never a point besides the first 2 weeks of his website where he was not ranking on google tho.

Anyway, yeah i went off subject a little, hopefully someone finds something useful, GL

No one can really give you an answer. There are many factors that will determine it.

Depends on your budget really. Bigger the budget, shorter the time it will take to get in top ten.

Depends on a lot of things really, the competition, how much time and money you invest, In some market you might never be able to penetrate the current market if to competitive.

it could take days, months, or years

all depending on the keyword, how well your onsite optimization is, how well your off-site optimization is, what you're competitors are doing...

In less than a week I didn't put too much effort and made #1 for a certain keyword string. Others took months of hard work, article marketing, forum posting, etc.
