Well it should not take a day or two maximum to get your site indexed. Start doing proper optimization for your site, online as well as offline. Real and original content is the key to get indexed faster everytime you upload a new page or write a new article, dont forget that
submitting to Google is not necessary. There is no sure that your site gets indexed. What you need to do is to build links as many as you can.
it depends upon the work that your doing for your site, where you have to submit your sites in fast indexing sites.
If your domain is old and you have put quality content on your website, with good on page optimization of website, then it can be indexed within 24 hours by Google.

I submitted mine like 4 or 5 days ago.. I also linked to it through twitter. When I search my domain on google I see the twitter reference, but my actual domain isn't listed. Is this normal?
It depends on what you're doing. You can get it indexed in an hour, a day, or a week. It's fairly easy getting Google to index it within a few hours with the use of some statistics websites and social bookmarking.
Don't waste your time submitting it to google. You are telling google that you have a new site, and it has to watch you carefully incase you are a spammer. You also don't worry about indexing, you would always get indexed unless you don't allow search engine bots.
It really depends on how fast Google crawls links. One of my site got indexed in less than 2 hours. I dropped some links in some high pagerank blog, and then BAMMM it was indexed.
