I am a starter with google search and everything related. I just started developing sites actually. I was curious to know of how long does it take for a site to appear in the search listing against the URL name only.

Depends what you mean by 'appear'? It can be just a few days, if it's linked to, for searches like 'sitenewmine.com' (if that's your domain name) but can take weeks for searches like 'plumbers in Shelbyville' if your site is about plumbers in Shelbyville. Unless of course you have no links at all, then it may never 'come up' no matter how long you wait. :)

So what matters more to be seen in the directories is to have more links? And yeah, the first phase does require my site URL only to appear on the search result. Say if the URL is myurl and i search for myurl. It should show up my site. I have not gone past the initial phase. I would really appreciate if you come up with comprehensive reply to this.

A few days, get a couple of links and they'll find it.

Just a couple of links would do it, just so Google knows it's there. Post a comment or two of some blogs with your website in the website box, not in your comment otherwise it will just get deleted as spam. Say on a page like this: http://www.gadgetguru.co.uk/fashion-gadgets/jpl-ultra-2000-compact-ultrasonic-cleaner/198/ it lets you put your name, email and website url in above the comment. Just make sure you read the articles on the blogs and that your reply says something that show you read it so it doesn't flag up as spam. I.e. don't write lame crap like 'nice site', 'I agree, brilliant post!' because that's waht all the crappy blog posting services do and your link either won't get approved, or will be associated with spam by search engines.

If you write something meaningful and unique on each blog post you make, the post will be approved and your link will be connected with unique meaningful text... and it won't cost you a penny! :)

That all depends. Sometimes, if you have created quality backlinks for your sites, Google will get your site indexed just in several hours.

Its been my experience that google indexed my site within two weeks. Once in the bots started adjusting they frequency and slowed down to about once a month. That could be because I wasn't updating my site regularly.

This information is certainly a great help. And how to check the PR for a site that exists on the world wide web actually. Quality backlinks should be from quality sites i guess.

Install Google toolbar to check PR, though PR has nothing to do with search results.

NO link is required , if you submit your site at google http://www.google.com/addurl/
google will crawl sooner or latter and will add your site in its index and latter you can find your site by searching site:yoursite.com
this will show all the pages indexed by google of your site

It depends on your SEO work. First thing, you must make your site fully SEO optimized. An SEO friendly website comes up easily in search results and after this build quality back links to your site. Good number of quality back links help in high SERP. So, build links on your targeted keywords.
