How often do SERPS update? Today my first SEO project was indexed at 116th for my target keyword. I know it's a long way down, but better than I was expecting. So now I'm going to start link building. How long until I see results?

Ah okay. So it's not like a three month wait like with PR? The SERPs just update whenever Google spiders your page and finds backlinks etc?
With the recent release of the new indexing system Caffeine, Google provides 50% fresher results than before so most likely crawlers and bots are much faster this time around. PR has a different algo with Caffeine so it's not really the same.

That's a very different issue to how long it will be until you see the results of your linkbuilding. First Google has to crawl the pages that the link is on. DP gets crawled throughout the day because it's been around a long time, has lots of backlinks and has lots of fresh content. How quickly your backlinks get found depends on the quality of the page they are on.
Yes, SERPs get updated every hour or so, but for you it depends how often your website is crawled. My website sometimes get #1 within 2-3 hours for the post title keyword for each new post.
SERPs gets updated every day...as google find increase in good quality backlinks and articles pointing to sites your SERPs will increase, it will not take much time, but keep doing off page optimization
when your site get index that time you can see the changes in you serps and they are updating their database at every mints ...like i have a blog which is crawl in 1 mints after i post my content on it..and it will determine your SERPs exactly after indexing your page...
