    Hello,

I have uploaded a site map to google before a week, however none of the webpages were indexed.

How long does it take for google to check all the page at the site map and get them indexed?

There is no set time for that.

As a rule of thumb, you upload the sitemaps, make sure there is no error report (generally this happens within a few hours), and forget about it!

Google may not crawl OR crawl but not index OR index but demote the index soon, etc at anytime.

All you can do is to make sure that you uploaded a right file without any errors.

Indexing of webpages and submission of sitemap are two different matters.

But submitting a sitemap you are telling the SEs that you have webpages on the Net
without any instruction that you want the spiders to come crawling immediately.

If the spiders decide to come and they are happy, they would be glad to come again
at a much faster rate after subsequent regular submissions.

Since I'm making money from selling digital products on a site with more than 4,500
webpages, I submit its sitemap on a fortnight (every 2 weeks) basis because I
want the spiders to crawl and index all my webpages.

One of my favorite hobbies is to Google "site:http://...." and see whether all my
    important new webpages are indexed.

Well I use a website that creates site maps for you automatically then you just have to tell google about it. Its fast but be sure to use a xml sitemap creator.

As pointed out above, there are several phases/steps relating to sitemaps:

    1) The sitemap file itself being read - this can happen as quickly as 20 minutes to a day or so (the first time).

    2) The URLs listed in the sitemap being CHECKED - this may take overnight to several days or longer.

    3) The URLs listed in the sitemap beinf INDEXED - this may take weeks, months, or never happen as the sitemap does not guarantee that the target URLs will be of value to search engine.

If your targets are "respectable", they should find their way into the index, and your sitemap(s) should be reloaded/checked automatically (no need to resubmit) regularly.

The "Crawl Stats" in "Webmaster Tools" are one way of qualitatively determining how interested the engine is in your pages.

    "20 minutes"?

I don't think so. 1 to 3 days is more reasonable.

In my experience Google will read your sitemap and spider the pages in that sitemap within a few days, and regularly afterwards. However, this doesn't influence indexing at all. I.e. if you keep resubmitting your sitemap you can get the Googlebot to read the pages on your site on a very frequent basis, but it could be they will never (or slowly) be added to the index.

So - for most small and medium-size web sites with normal navigation you could say that submitting a sitemap is useless.

1-3 days may be typical, but we have experienced our sitemaps being read shortly after being posted.

I suppose it depends on how frequently travelled the site is. Our crawl stats are:

Number of pages crawled per day
    Maximum 33,843
    Average 12,208
    Minimum 4,890

Maybe that's we we get our new sitemaps loaded more quickly from time to time.
