If an editor aproves a site, does it show up automatically?

    or is there a delay?

Well, you asked the question. :)

Once an editor approves the site, it is added to the directory immediately.
The web pages you see when you view a category are statically-generatoed webpages that usually update within an hour, often minutes.
The search function at the ODP is notoriously slow to update and can take several weeks.
The RDF dump which downstream users see, gets generated on a regular interval (not sure what that is right now).
And Google and others update sometime after that.
