How long does changing nameservers take?

Hello all DP members, I changed one of my domains name servers to try out a different web hosting company. Now, when I try to visit the site, there is an error saying that the server could not be found. Is this normal for it? I did the change only about an hour ago.

5 minutes after you change them, check with a proxy see if they work.

Generally, it takes 24-36 hours for the nameservers to propagate, however, it might be possible that it may take more time and hence you should wait for some more time and check if the nameservers are propagated. If not, contact your domain name registrar and ask whether the nameservers are updated correctly.

    Best of luck!!

ive noticed if your domain is older it is very quick for changing your NS, but ive also noticed that non TLD take much longer to propagate.

The normal period is 48-72 hours but it still depends on the DNS server's resolver configuration. Last time when I updated my DNS to my server, it took around 3-4 minutes to start appearing the website but which may not be for everyone else. So, in order for your site to appear in every users over the world then you must allow time no matter what to propagate the DNS successfully.

It will be beneficial for you if you can see the site updated immediately as you might be developing the website & moreover you might be able to put up a page for everyone to see such as under construction page. So that, as soon as everyone can access your website, they will see a valid page from your hosting company which you can still upload whether you see your website or not but as soon as after your update your name servers.

Finally, I agree as alex288288 said, that it varies from TLDs to TLDs, SLDs etc. So, not every extension takes same time, sometime certain domain provider sell uncommon TLDs/SLDs of different country etc. which takes longer time frame then the normal 24-72 hours.

Make sure things look right for your DNS health:

If all is good, it can take up to 48 hours for the change to take effect globally.
