Just curious here. How long, in hours, do you spend on a new web site (design and content) before you publish it and add adsense to the site?

Just trying to guage my efforts. I've been working on a new site off and on for a pretty good while now. I still think its not quite ready.

I'd recommend you finish the site, get it live, and promote it, then add Adsense. If you add Adsense too early, you may be drawing most of your visitors away from your site. Get a good layout and a fair share of content. Good luck.

I like using drupal for my websites, so I have a pretty much standard design that only requires changing a few graphics. I have purchased several large libraries of graphics that make it easy to do a search and find what I need. Setting up a new site takes maybe a few hours to get the DB setup, configured, DNS registered, graphics updated, durpal settings tweaked, Google Sitemap setup, Yahoo sitemap setup, Google Analytics installed, server site analytics installed, etc.

Generally I like to have about 5,000 to 10,000 words of content before making the site go live. Then I like to have about 1,000 page views per day before starting to look at adding adsense.

It is often easier to get links with no PR when you aren't using advertising yet--especially if you have decent content. (It is easier to get a link in Wikipedia to a non-adsense site). I'd rather spend a few months getting a good groundwork in place and then start trying to monetize a site, than start off with adsense and hurt my profit later on.

yeah. once you have the layout and the content add it. why not?

if it is going to drive people away maybe consider not going so heavy with the ads.

ads shouldn't be something that drives the consumer away, it should be something they don't even know you are getting paid for.

Ads don't have to "drive" them away, but it does give them a way to exit your page. Especially if you are trying to get a community started, putting in ads too early may end up sending them to your competitors instead.

Another reason for waiting until you are getting at least a little traffic is because there is safety in numbers. If you have 100 people view your site in a day and 10 click on ads, this is going to look normal to Google. If you have 10 visitors and all 10 happen to click on ads, this might trigger some warning bells. I'd rather wait to put up adsense until I have enough traffic to minimize the chances of getting kicked out of the program accidentally.

I ad adsense or whatever monetization mechanisms to my sites from day one. I, however, tend to create blogs for the most part and make sure that I have at least 7 to 15 posts before I make a new blog live.

It all depends on what the site is. If I'm making a forum, such as a vBulletin based forum, I can get it set up in a few hours. Ads can be added then, but sometimes with membership based sites I wait until traffic picks up to add ads in.

If it's a news site or an articles based site then I usually put ads up right away. I can get a decent looking site made in a few hours most of the time.
