How long do Google ban's last? 3 months, 2 years?

Just wondering how long Google can ban a website?

I know of a website that was given a penalty for some (still unknown) reason to ban it from the Google.com search listing, it lost all its PR. This was a while ago.

Will it every return? How long do google ban's last? I am sure it depends on the violation but surely they must be a min and a max?

    Thanks all!

First, you need to correct the problem. If you don't know what the problem is, then you'll have to start from scratch. Then file a re inclusion request via webmaster central (Sitemaps).

Back when I was first starting out, I did some stupid things. One of my sites was banned for a little over a year. I can assure you, that ban has well and truly lifted. More recently though, it took 3 months after I filed the request to be back in the index, then another 3 months to get my SERPS back.

I guess it all depends on the nature of the offence.

A reinclusion request as per (http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/reinclusion-request-howto/) has been done. This was a few months ago, not sure if this is the webmaster central (Sitemaps) way you describe?

Anyway this was a few months ago and still no luck. Are you saying that reinclusion should take about 6 month on average?

Well, for me personally, I know my offense was not so "Extreme". But I admitted what I did wrong. I knew what I did. It was 6 months in TOTAL before I got back to the top of the SERPs. I guess it varies though. Some report much less time.

You sure you don't know what you did wrong?

I think the site was banned due to duplicate content or from buying in links, either way both were stopped months ago. The site actually ranks on Google.co.uk when seach UK only is selected. But it no longer ranks anywhere else. Is this a serious ban? Is there such thing as a perminant ban?

Only the most serious Google bans are permanent. Some sites come back even though they have not fixed the reason for the ban.

Best thing to do though is to fix the problem and then ask for re inclusion.

does a info:www.yoursite.com give any results? If so then then it's a penalty rather than a ban. Fix your problem, and eventually rankings will come back up.

The DP keyword tracker is a great tool for tracking this.

Yes, info:www.yoursite.com gives one result, the index page title and description.

So it looks like a pernalty? How can I find the problem for sure?

(thanks for all help so far)

That's just the thing with Google bans, because nobody is ever told the reasons why they're left in the dark.

I am sure it must be a penalty, just need to be sure that what caused it is gone.

    I feel your pain.
One of my site got some penalty from yesterday. Its not banned cause I still have some google traffic, but its exemelly decreased. 400-500 daily before - arround 50 today.
Now, only thing that comes on my mind is directory submission, I havent done any other thing lately.

I've had a ban that came back in the serps but it ranks very low.
IMO It's easier to start over.
