It's funny that everyone's saying the same damn thing but no one really states that SEO is a tricky process, there's lots of tricks that work and most people aren't disclosing them. :)

Well it depends on your Quest to learn
    Everyday you learn something more
So there is no deadline to learning, You cannot learn everything at a time, its not a EXAM

Its daily practice be it SEO or anything else.

Service provider I dont agree with you. And as people said no one can guarantee TOP 1 ranking , so i agree with the rest of people, you cant say who is offering what and on what basis as well

Very true. SEO is generally a very secretive industry.

The search engines don't want to disclose how their algorithms work because the spammers and SEOs will 'work the system'.

Other SEOs don't generally want to give up the 'tricks' they've discovered through testing because knowing them when others don't gives them a competitive advantage when they are promoting their own sites or those of their clients in the SERPs.

You can't really take classes on it at your local university. There are VERY few informative conferences that you can attend on the topic that offer a lot of insights into the 'tricks' of the trade. Pubcon is pretty good... SES is watered down... more corporate.

So basically people are left with only information on the 'basics' out there in the wild, which is why for the most part, people have to experiment on their own running tests to determine cause and effect of certain types of changes for themselves.

Well, it's been about 7 months, but i started to practice 3-4 months ago when i purchased my first domain and started my first Web Directory .
It's not much, but as the others said "you learn as long as you live"

    Peace !

No one can say how long you need to learn! whatever you learn you have keep it updating because it changes frequently. Search engine algorithm, SEO and SEM tricks are changing every day. So you need to keep it update every day. Start learning and keep you update and must test what you are learning. Thats the most important thing.

It took me about 2-3 years to really get it. With that said, you must keep learning. In the short time I have been doing this, I have seen practices like reciprical linking, three-way links, directories and others come and go only to be substituted by soon to be dinosaur methods like social networking and blogging.

I can see social networks getting down to the most popular players and the others falling by the wayside, but I don't see how "blogging" is fly by night...it's merely a software platform used to design a website.

Granted, some of the "tricks" that people use in an effort to trick search engines, or not do the work, like autoblogging are surely doomed, no doubt about it.and I certainly believe blogging for adsense is dead, it's heart just doesn't know enough to stop beating....

.but since every company and university in the world has a blog (some making very good money), they are here to stay, just like any HTML designed site.

They are the easiest form of communication on the web.

SEO is a continuous learning process! But if you think that, there are proven results already coming from all your SEO strategies and had master a lot about SEO. Then you might want to help other with those proven results you've gotten and already master.
