A couple months for me in most cases, just the standard directory submissions and link exchanges usually.

It really depends on the niche.

1 site I did recently is getting consistantly 600 a day through the search engines, in less then 3 weeks.

But that is an unusual one :)

Methods used. link exchange, some good keyword research, article submissions.

This article submission thing you said, do you submit articles to sites that you type and they link to you?

Google "Replace your wedding dj with an ipod" to get an example of an article I used for my wife's site. Theoretically, every occurance of that article contains a backlink to my wife's site. If you had a wedding related site, you could publish that article on your site, and then you'd give her a link from that page as the "price" for using that article.

Since it would be too tough to find every wedding web site in existence or that is ever going to be built, you submit the article s to an article directory. That way when new site owners need content, they can just go to these article directories to find pages and pages of relevant content for their site. That's where huge lists of article directories come into play. If you submit to a large number of article directories, your article is more likely to be found by people seeking fresh content. Huge lists of article directories is time consumingb though, and that's where submission services (like isnare or mad4u's service) and submission software (like mine or article marketer or article announcer) come in.

It took my latest site little under a month to get over 300 unique visitors a day. I exchanged links with similar sites, sumbitted a story to Digg.com and tagged the posts with Technorati tags since the site is a blog. I also made use of Google Sitemaps so that google indexes my pages better.

The site has now been online for around 1,5 months and I have close to 700 visitors on an average day and as many as 2000 uniques some days.

    Not there yet.

    And reading through this thread, the rest of you sure make it sound easy. Sheesh! I am getting discouraged, but . . . . I . . . . will . . . . carry . . . on. . .

    Aaaargh!
I have been diligently submitting to directories, have several other sites linking to mine, have pretty good PR, etc., but I am lucky to get 10 unique visitors per day. And the site has been up for over a year. I guess it is too geeky for the masses. Damn! So much for Plan "A" (getting rich quickly, sitting on the beach with a cool drink and a couple babes, and collecting checks every week, etc.).

The guys who have been getting hundreds of referrals after a month are not getting them from search engines though.

If you don't mind me asking, but how do you mange to get 700 a day if so few are search referrals. Is it link building startegically or mass link building or even advertising? Thanks.

Have something people are interested in. I get over a thousand uniques a day at after 5, but only 1-2% of that comes from search referrals according to my logs. It all comes from links I have out there or word of mouth: forums, emails, etc.

    1 site.

It is becoming a bit overwhelming for me. I need to stop doing something because I'm getting less than 1 hour a day to work on version 3 of Article Distributor. I can't quit my day job, I can't neglect the family, and I don't want to neglect after5, but ???

I should point out that After 5 is not my only site, but most of the others are clients that can't be neglected either. I've farmed as much out to my partners as possible already. :(

It is ideal if you get at least 60-70% of your vistors from search engines if you want to generate good adsense revenue because they are coming to find something. Return vistors very rarely click on ads. However, from it is always good if at least 30-40% of the vistors are returnees because search engines can be volatile.
