Just wanted to know how long you can take a site down for, before it loseses its page rank / its search engine position, etc.

I know it carnt get any more backlinks, but it wont lose them.

I have a site that i want to remake, i build all my sites online, not locally. so i will need to take it down with a page explaining whats going on.

I just dont want to lose my PR and positions etc.

    Any info would be great.

    Cheers.

Just create a test folder on your server to create your sites in. When you're ready, migrate that to your / and it will all be fine... if you did not use absolute url's that is, cause those suck. See, no downtime :)

guesss this does not work if there are major problems in the site, which was the reason for the redevelopment in the first place.

It's hard to tell how fast u lose your listings and PR as it depends on how often and when the search spiders come around to your site. If your site is hot, like www.cnn.com, it cld be as often as a few times a day, although don't think anybody's site will achieve that standard. For those new sites, it cld be as infrequent as once every few mths.

You cld possibly do a test, by changing the title or description slightly. Then wait and see how long it takes before the search listing results show the new title. That will give u a rough indication of how often the spiders come around.

However, this may still be risky and I wld say to do this only at your own risk. If possible, try not to take it offline at all. Remove the parts that need removing in order for the site to keep running. Then do your changes in the backend..... my 2cents
