How long can domain prices keep going up?

With the recent sales of Porn.com selling for $9 Million & Poker.com selling for $23 Million, I was wondering how high prices can go?

Will a generic dot com domain name be worth $500 million dollars in the future?

If prices keep going up, how will the people that buy these names end up making revenue off those sites?

Do you think that .com names will slow down & ccTLDs will have the biggest growth in the future?

I am interested to hear people's opinions.

23 to 500 million is a bit extreme. For a domain to reach that high, the internet itself would have to play a bigger part in daily life/marketing. And seeing as how big internet is today, that would pretty much mean the internet would be in our blood. I guess it would be possible to reach 100 million, assuming some new technology to compete with the internet isn't developed. I could be thinking too much.

    Cheers

It depends how much internet business expands - how long has the net been a commercialised space? 10 years? 15? Seems like early days to me, with a lot of room for expansion. IMHO.

I don't see why not, of course the question is how far into the future...
How much was paid for poker.com in 1998? 23-500 Mil is what, a 20x growth in value?, what was the growth rate between 98-07?

500 Mil seems relatively cheap compared to a global marketing campaign to teach the masses to associate different words with the product they want?
e.g. Go to "nicecardplayingsite.cc!" vs Go to "Poker.com!"

I would expect .com to continue to lead the growth.

All very much IMHO, I've only been domaining for a year or so - I fully expect to get my opinions shot down!

i read on acorndomains.co.uk that Business.com has again been sold between 350 Million to 360 Million U.S. Dollars ...........

As long as quality domains remain scarce to buy and demand keeps rising along with new domain participants like investors/traders/hedge funds/VC's/newer businesses keep discovering this asset class, future is extremely bright for quality domain names :)

That was for an entire business making millions per year, not just the domain name.

The main problem with domains in that either Microsoft or Google could basically kill the industry by making slight changes to their software. They both want us using their search engines more often (that generates revenue for them) so they will do what they can to ensure people use domain names less often and search engines more often in the future.

I wonder how long we'll have to wait to see a domain sell for $1 Billion, that'd be cool!

These are the current domains+websites sales that occured recently

    dictionary.com ... $100M
    business.com ... $360M
    MySpace.com ... $580M

It is just like any other part of the economy. It is all about supply and demand, if someone wants something and they have the money there is no limit to what it might sell for. Each year the Internet is getting bigger and good domains are becoming harder to get so it is possible for the right name to see some larger prices.

Internet will become the most powerful tools in the world. As long term perspective, 500 millions is a good deal for some top domain, like generic.

MySpace isn't just a domain name, it's a money making business and they have already shown that that value was good as it will make more than that and the buyers will profit.

i believe that doman names are just like real estate. it will just keep on rising up. one word generic domain names are the prime, oceanfront, mansions. however, i believe that 2 word and even three word generics will become very , very valuable in the future
