is it a good idea commercially speaking to have a long name consisting of 3 or more words? how about xxxxxxyyyyzzzzzz.com, should hyphens be used to separate long words instead of having them all together?
Well, in theory, you should be able to have a domain name with something like 40ish characters but the longer it is especially when they do not make up meaningful words, it would be difficult for anyone to remember them. In your case, if you have a lot of repeated characters, people may miss a character and you lose them. For example, a domain name like veryhardtorememberdomainname.com is easier to remember than xxxyyyyyyzzzzzzz.com . Hyphen helps to distinguish words but may be hard to type. Short words are more sought after. Do you expect more type-ins or people just clicking links and bookmarks to get to your site ?
recently i wrote an article about choosing the right domain name. personally, i think you are better going with a brand name. long domains are hard to remember and don't stand out. Hyphens and dashes can get forgotten. Hard to spell words as well. Keep it simple. Keep it memorable. ask yourself, if i was a cook is it easier to be called: howtomakeasoufle.com or chef911.com just my 2 cents
yeah, I agree about hyphens, they are hard to type, another thing, xxxxyyyyzzzzz was meant to be separate words, like word1word2word3.com thanks man, I would like to read your article, care to post the link?
For search engine rankings, keywords phrases can work- and the hypens don't matter on the domain name for the search engines. Hypens almost always devalue a domain name. 15 characters is considered the maximum for branding a domain name (type-ins) and 10 or less is much better. The .com is obviously preferred.
just come to mark8t.com--top left corner...just refresh title if not there until you see "Choosing The Right Website Address" don't kow if posting link is against TOS
Beg to differ about what? There have been studies about user habits and how they won't type in domains longer than 15 characters. Of course there are people who do, it's just a much smaller percentage. The top dollar domain sales are almost always under 15 characters. If longer domain names were as good for branding, you wouldn't see such lower prices. Of the top 200 domains, only (1) is over 15 characters (googlesyndication.com - which isn't a type-in) and the vast majority are under 10.
Although you can register a domain as long as 63 characters, it's always better to have a short and brandable domain, maybe less than 15 characters. Try and avoid hyphens in a domain and look for a .com.
I wouldnt go with a long name. More than 20 characters or so. Unless it is a subject matter that is more for amusement and fun than to realy drive traffic in, earn money or bring about pertinant information. To me it would vary really. But anything between 5 - 25 characters should be sufficient enough
