I think google's algorithm gives importance to pages/sites by the number of external links that point to the site homepage or the specific page. So by increasing the number of external links to your site you can influence google's ranking.
think about a democratic election. a candidate who get the most vote wins the election. pretty much same concept with search engine ranking. with so many sites out there, a site which has most votes ranks the highest. votes in this case is endorsement from other sites in the form of backlinks. there are lot of other factors/variables that come into play, but as a general rule, more votes/backlinks you get, higher you rank.
The logic here is easy to understand. If more and more people are linking to a given page, then there must be something special about that page. That is why link building is the most important aspect of Google rankings and therefore SEO.
I read the Google book and it's all based on the same concept as research papers. If more citations are made to a source then it must be good. The two founders of Google were PhD students at Stanford.
This info about page rank will give you an idea how back linking will improve it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PageRank
Couldn't have explained better! Each link (backlink) you get for your site is counted as PLUS 1 vote for your site. More the votes to your site, the higher it will rank for your keywords in search engines.
Hello, waxman1000 , sultanofseo , sarahtan , JamesColin you all said - more link means the site is more popular but i I am not agree with you guys i know many sites which have few back links but having good ranking and some sites have many many back links but don't have ranking... google like the natural linking so i think the ranking is depends on the quality of links not on quantity of links... Thanks
bishan is right. A lot of backlinks doesn't mean they will be helpful for you. It's better to focus on quality rather than quantity.
There are two things that helps you rise through the ranks in google and that is on page and off page. On page consists of seen and unseen, seen is what visitors see and unseen is what bots see such as meta and comments and h1 tags. After you have completed on page seo it is time to build links. The reason for this is just because you placed some keywords and really went all out on the optimization of your website so have thousands if not millions of others so google needed a way to seperate these sites and give them importance and that is where backlinks help. If google sees a website linking to your site they figure the website linking to you likes your website and registers that as a vote for your site. The more votes the better just make sure to stick with your niche and/or well developed sites such as www.digg.com and what ever you do stay away from ffa link pages and auto submissions that blast your link to thousands of sites. Google will think your trying to be a little tricky bugger and will dock you or ban you.
I thinks it's the popularity of the site and the backlinks your site has. Plus the age of the site and it's reputation.
As many quality link you have, you will become more popular in term of search engine. if you are getting backlinks from good sites it will increase .. your position in search engines..
More links = Higher Search Engine Rankings. Google counts each link as relevance to the anchor text. So if you get many anchor text as "blahblah" then Google will put you higher for the word "blahblah" because it thinks your site is relevant.
Website = SEO = Backlinks = Traffic = Money Quality backlinks boost your PageRank and your position in search engines, paving the way for increased targeted traffic. Search engines depend on links for search rankings, so the constant introduction of new links is key to your success. Google and the other search engines need to know that your site is relevant; building relevant backlinks is a critical part of this. As your article is posted on more and more sites, those links tell the search engines that your site is popular. There just isn't an easier way to get improved search engine placement, more relevant one-way links, and tons of qualified traffic to your site than by providing website owners with the unique quality content they need to attract more visitors.
Linkbuilding is a way to popularize a site. Google gives weight to the number of backlinks. The more BLs you have, the better.
