How limited are blogs? (Referring to content on page)

Let me start off by saying I am completely new to blogs. They have just recently piqued my interest because it seems like a quick, fast, and organized way to run my site.

Basically, my site currently consists of forums. I wanted to add a homepage to sort of hold the site together, and my idea was very similar to that of a blog. However, ideally, what I want is to have a column that works like a blog (dated entries that can easily be updated), and have two columns on either side. The right side would have a poll of some sort, and the left would have links navigating my site. Are these possible with a blog?

Of course, you can do virtually anything with a Word Press Blog.
Once you get started, and learn your way around, you will be very happy.
I run a 3 column blog myself...It's open season on what you can do.

thanks for the quick response, and not jumping on my noobish quesiton. I didn't want to dive into blogging, if it was not what I was looking for. But, it sounds like its the way to go for me.
