How is my site loading?

My site (in sig) has been loading really funny lately and slow. I don't know if it is just my computer acting up, my internet connection or the server. If any of you have a free minute, could you visit my site and let me know how it loaded for you? Thanks!

Your right it is a bit slow.

    Here check this out. ;)

    http://www.websiteoptimization.com/services/analyze/wso.php?url=http://www.seethisitem.com/

As you say some of it maybe down to sever load or other factors such as your computer or internet connection speed but you can make some changes to your site to make it load quicker too. :)

Using frames and tables for layout and not using CSS for all your styles wont be helping, also haveing a non standards compliant site will also slowdown the loading off you pages as the browser has to workout what you code means rather than just rendering valid code.

Thanks for the feedback. It is so odd that this is happening just recently. It used to load incredibly fast and I have always received positive comments regarding my site speed. Now, it is having loading problems. Frustrating.

If you have made no changes since it was loading faster then it sounds like the main problem is the server is being overworked. ;)

I would still advise making your site more loading speed freindly by making the changes you can though, as you can see from that report I gave you a link to there are a quite a few things you can do to improve loading speed of your site.

for me, the site itself comes up instantly, or rather, the text on your site, but the images on the page only show up about 4-5 later. If your page is written in PHP, you could always use ob_gzhandler() to compress your pages.

I timed the loading time on your site using the stopwatch function on my cell phone. It took about 7 seconds for the text to load up and 1 minute 10.24 seconds for the images to load. The one that slowed everything else down seemed to be the one just above your google ads on the right. It took far longer than the rest to load up, so maybe try optimizing that one and see what happens?

Loaded on Firefox with a dial up modem dialed in at 45.2Kpbs.

Thanks, I'll check that image out and see what I can do. By the way, how exactly do I optimize an image?

Slow I would make sure all images have been optimized and learn better coding techniques.(CSS mainly) ;)

I wish it was as easy as that. Unfortunately, I am not a programmer. I had someone create the site for me so to have my programmer change the site over to css would just cost me more money. Thanks for the tip, though.

Still, I just don't understand why the site suddenly got this way. It was super fast and always has been since day one. The entire home page would literally load in a second images and all. The last few weeks, this started happening. My programmer hosts the site on his server and I checked out all the sites on his client list and they load fast as well. So, I don't believe it is an overworked server issue. Very puzzling.

The only thing that loaded slow for me was the Blue Menu on the left, everything else loaded pretty much immediately...

    Hi Janet,

Checked out your site.. it does load slower because most of your graphic files are in jpg format. (interface on the left) Open them up and save it as .gif file so that our computers can download it as cache and refreshing pages will load faster. Does this make sense? this will help out with loading time.
Other than that.. your site's frame is alright navigation.
    Best luck...

Umm... I'm afraid I can't help you on that because that's one of the things a friend of mine is doing for my site at the moment. I have no idea how the things are optimized, just know that was what I was told they needed on my site to make them load faster. Sorry. :-/ What program do you use for images? Maybe do a google search for tutorials on site optimization? I did a quick search and these are a few tutorials I found that might help, I didn't read them very much though.

Paint Shop Pro Tutorial - Optimizing Images for the Web

    Photoshop Tutorial -Smart Image Optimization

I can't easily find a tutorial for GIMP, which is my preferred image program, but in looking for a GIMP tutorial I did find what looks like a decent description of what is done and why... Everyone's Guide to Optimizing Graphics

Maybe someone else here has better information than I could find on them sites?

    Hello, Janet.
"Optimizing an image" means to make smaller the size of the image
file. Generally, it is achieved by decreasing the number of colors of
the image. That's why GIF files are smaller: they are restricted to
use only 256 colors (at most). The same image is usually bigger in
JPG format than in GIF format. Painting programs (like Photoshop,
Fireworks, etc.) can reduce even more the size of a GIF image.
