You mean Adison? I'm curious in this story also. In 1997 (when the domain was registered) it wasn't required to be accredited US university to get the domain --- policy only went to effect in 2001. So, please check registration date of domain in question if it is not Adison
Yeah I was talking about Adison. I did not want to mention them by name since a lot of people are making money from it. I don't agree with a fake university, but if you are naive enough to believe an edu automatically has authority then you are naive enough to buy it regardless.
Nopes ! You are not wrong . You need to have an institution ( established ) to get the edu domain . Ficticious University
I have been very curious about this myself. It looks like this "university" has sold or exchanged dozens and dozens of pages and the folks who have obtained these pages are in turn selling links. Judging by the length of some of those threads many of them seem to be selling quite a lot of links. I admit that I was taken by this at first, but thanks to Lenny, I got out of it. EDIT --> I find it very odd that there doesnt seem to be any interest in this thread.
.edu links dont have any more value then others links. It is the normally quality of the page that gives more value to a link. noty the fact it's .edu.
Well, .edu links HAVE more value (just check top results in Google for 'buy viagra') in Google, but G. can very easily remove this authority status from any .edu site indulged in link-selling activities. Or perhaps they hand-assign preferrance to university sites -- and certainly they didn't do it to Adison.
They may not have any more value for the seach engines, but they sure have a lot more value to many link buyers. I have seen threads going multiple pages with people buying links on blogs for this particular .edu I have to admit that I jumped on this myself in the beginning, but have since just abandoned it as I learned more about it.
You may find this interesting. http://www.educause.edu/edudomain/faq.asp Specifically this: "6. Why do some organizations have .edu domain names even though they do not meet the eligibility requirements? The Cooperative Agreement between EDUCAUSE and the U.S. Department of Commerce specifies that all .edu names in existence as of October 29, 2001 are "grandfathered", regardless of current or past eligibility requirements. "
