Hey, this may not be the best forum for this topic but it is the closest I can find. Any response to this question will be greatly appreciated. I need to know how IP addresses are used to identify a computer? Can an IP address be used to identify the physical address of a user? If there are 2 computers in my house, will both computers have the same IP address? If I use one of my computers to make a purchase online, can the vendor trace the transaction back to my computer and address using the IP address? Yea, a lot of questions; I probably need a tutorial on Internet basics. Thanks guys for helping.
The same way someone can find your home by using your postal address. Yes, as Internet Service Providers know your postal address. In that case that is a local network (LAN) and each computer will have its own IP. Eventually, yes.
Short answer is yes they can find you if need be. There is a trail of everything you do online, that the right people can trace.
Yes they can find it coz you using the ISP public IP to go out the internet. If you want to let the vendor not find it out then use another ISP so that the IP will be different.
They can find some info about an IP Address. Just check this site http://www.ipgp.net and see what your IP Address will disclose.
If you think you're anonymous on the net then you're in for a shock. You are NEVER anonymous and it is relatively easy to track someone down to their postal address if necessary. Not saying anyone can do it without some authority to question ISPs to get the "last link in the chain" information from them. We've been involved in helping the police track down internet users in the past and they've always been found. One time was a particularly nasty assault that left the victim paralyzed just for a iPhone, but due to their greed we managed to get a hint of where they were, did some digging around, gave the police the necessary info, they contacted the relevant ISP, and the guy was arrested 200 miles away within hours. More sophisticated users can use multiple proxies to cover their tracks, but this isn't within the skill-set of the vast majority of internet users and not necessary unless you're totally paranoid or have something to hide.
