How important meta tags are?

is it necesary to add meta taks to a website, or the serach engines spiders analyze the pages better without it?

 

The meta keywords tag is pretty useless and you don't need to include it. Back in the 90s the search engines relied upon this tag until every spammer had a list of 200 keywords in this tag. To fight those spammers, the search engines eventually had to put less weight on this tag. Now I think they only really use it to weed out spammers. Perhaps it is still used by some of the lesser known search engines, but you don't need to worry about them.

The description meta tag is definitely worth including. It allows you to control the summary that shows up in search results under your page title. This can dramatically effect your click through rate and overall traffic. Some search engines also put a lot of weight on keyword usage in the description meta tag. So it is a good idea to include your target keywords in this tag.

The description meta tag is definetly worth doing, its your description that shows in search engines.

Doing the meta keyword tag doesnt hurt, it shouldnt take you too long to fill it with a few keywords, dont get caught up on it though, its no longer that effective.

 

Google also uses the description so get some keywords into that as well.
