in terms of SEO how important is the actualy url? What i mean is, say you have a site about digital cameras... what difference would it make if your url was. keferkd.com or kejkdcameras.com?

does the text of the url make much difference?

If your URL also corresponds to the content of your site, and comprises a keyword phrase that people are likely to search on, it could be very important. For example, if your site is digital-cameras.com, then even if you don't specify your prefered anchor text, any links (even those just with http:// and your domain name) are going to give you a keyword-rich link.

    Other advantages are:

    1) Your URL can communicate exactly what your site is about. Vistors are much more likely to go to the above URL than to keferkd.com, which gives no hint about the content.

    2) A clear simple URL is going to look much more professional.

    3) URLs like mine (www.japanese-name-translation.com) are easier to remember for the casual visitor. Easier to remember means more word-of-mouth referrals and more people coming back later.

    I hope this helps!

They don't carry a huge amount of SEO weight, but, similarly to titles, they can be useful when users are choosing which site from the results page to click on.

I hadn't thought of that, thanks.

I think Y! and perhaps MSN give more weight to URL contents than G does.

To answer to this question is simple...

How important is your url is how much
easier for someone to spell it, to type
it in browser, to mention it to anyone
that will able to write, to note your
site exactly as what is being said or
    mentioned.

If anyone has some difficulties to write
your website url, let alone searching it
    on the net.

Your worst nightmare when they type
differently, they will come across other
people website, leaving your url behind
cos they think this is your website..

Things get even worst when they like
it, they past the info to other surfers
and alot of revenues are wasted, let
    alone traffic...

Though I knew form the start it wouldn't have much SEO effect, I went with mine so I could brand myself and my team. Branding is a big deal to my and part of my exit strategy when I retire.

    Hope that helps.

For SEO, the keyword in the url, is pretty much important.

Is there a place where I can find out which variations of an URL is more popular?

    hmmm,

i'm thinking of moving my site to another domain.

    let me explain... i'm a graphic/web designer at www.twelfty.co.uk

now, whilst that name is certainly easy to remember once you've visited, would i be better off moving to:

    www.websitedesign.ws or perhaps www.websitedesigners.ws ?

i own both - any thoughts guys?
