How important is updating content?

I've heard that it's important for SEO that you constantly add content to your site. But how important is it really? I've got a site with about 50 pages of static content, and then within a subdirectory, I've got a blog that I update.

The 50 pages of static content is really the shining star of my site. Is it doomed SEO wise if I never change or update it?

I wouldn't say it is doomed, especially if the content is good, there are links to it, and you have a good sitemap. But engines do seem to like recent content, so maybe you can leverage the blog to keep the site fresh.

    But does

www.mysite.com benefit from updating at www.mysite.com/blog/blogpost?

Or is that considered too far removed from the main site?

Not if there are links from mysite to the blog or if there are links in a sitemap to both.

I've had sites (stores) where I rarely updated the homepage and/or main landing pages and they ranked fine. I did add products occasionally.

But if you think your content is goos from the point of SEO and Visitors point of you then you dont need to change the content of your website if your site is on good ranking yes if you feels that your content is not upto the mark then you shld change your content...

Apply common sense: Without food you can not survive any longer. If you do not consume fresh food, you can not be very healthy. :)

if u have hell lot of backlinks, high PR, and evergreen content, i don't think there is any need to update it.

If u add comments option, content gets updated automatically.

IMHO it's not as important as it is in somewhat non-competitive markets. However in markets where the competition is fierce it can make a difference.

Its not necessarily doomed BUT throughout time you may see a drop if you don't change them. Updating the content doesn't have to involve going through everypage at once and updating all of them. Slow small changes are just as good. You can even just reorganize the words on the page and maybe change a sentence and that would be considered an update. With 50 pages you can do one at a time maybe once a month or so. That would help keep you ranked but with the ever changing algorithms, who knows.

You can update your content if you think that your old content doesn't give you better rankings and more visits. You have to analyzed your site again if what's wrong with your optimization.

I think google and other search engines try to give some relevance boost to new content. But I'm not sure how significant this boost is. But I think if your content is old and have enough inbound links you should be fine.

You don't have to change static pages!
This does not matter. The more pages the better (static or not).
But you have to place new content, to let SE come back regularly.

If the search engines see same content everyday then you will not seen as a provider of fresh information and as a result bad search engines ranking .
