How important is the title tag?

it is very important. Use 2-3 keywords in your title

 

i would say its probably the most important element of the site in terms of the target market of your website and the particular keywords you wish to be ranking highly for. it determines the subject matter of your page and gives the SE's clear guidelines as to the page content.

 

The title tag definately is one of the most important on-page criteria for SEO.

However, keep in mind that not only must the html title tag be optimized to rank you in the SERPs, but also to convert SERPS views to SERPS clicks - in other words, the title must also appear attractive to your target audience when they see it in the SERPS. If that's not the case, you don't benefit from your rankings appropriately.
