How important is the meta name description?

In my music lyric website, my meta name description is something like "Lyrics and songs, music, everything you could think of"

Whilst that is ok, I think the everything you could think of is a bit general and does not add very much.

Altering the meta name description after a long time - can it mess with your PR or have a negative short term impact on either searches or indexed pages etc?

If you had such a meta name description on your website would you change it?

    Any suggestions appreciated. Thank you

The meta name description is very important. SE still rank it as very important.

Plus it is usually the text that is listed below your site URL in search engines results. That makes it your one and only opportunity to "sell" your site to your potential visitor and convince them to click, so make it count!

Thanks for your comments fellow forum members.

Only a tiny, tiny selection of people find the site via the homepage. Most people arrive at the site on a specific lyric page when they have searched for that specific lyrics. I suppose one could argue that my homepage is an untapped area and I would like to think I could optimise it at sometime in the future without detrement.

If my homepage was optimised for SE/META purposes, would I put at risk my PR or risk losing visitors as a result?

I currently have a PR4 and about 2,000 - 2,500 visitors a day and would not want to risk losing visitors.

Has anyone dramatically altered the homepage trying to optimise keywords etc and found that they lost a big % of visitors?

Basically what are the consequences of such actions?
