How important is it to leave the hyphen out?

Discussion in 'Domain Names' started by Clear Presence Media, Dec 6, 2008.

I have several domain options for an online store I would like to start, such as x-direct.com, x-shop.com, shop-x.com, and x-store.com

My question is, how important is it to leave the hyphen out of the url and search for a name that is available without the hyphen?

    Thanks in advance

I would not buy anything from an online store with a hyphenated URL, but that's just me. Hyphen is ok if you are building a site to profit from adsense or affiliates or something.
Surely you can find a good domain without hyphen?

Personally I would never give a credit card number to a site with a - in the URL. If you want customers, the URL needs to sound legit.

I dont mind hyphens, one of my online stores has two hyphens and sells lots of stuff.
Only domainers seem to care, for normal people its easier to read.

Thanks for the input guys. I decided to leave the hyphen out and get a URL without one. If 2 people here are saying they wouldnt buy from a hyphenated URL, that could be 2 customers out as well.

    Thanks

hyphens don't matter. They are either going to buy or not. With or without hyphens..

Better a hyphenated name that reflects what the site is really about than a non hyphenated that does not. Of course I might be biased :)

I believe there is more a stigma amongst domainers about hyphens. If it is a marketable domain name or domain name that is descriptive of what you are selling then it is fine.

Many hyphenated "keywords" are going for thousands of dollars. Albeit most are probably two words.

A hyphenated domain will not affect a customers choice to buy... Atleast from my experience. I had a hyphenated dot net domain that has been my most profitible retail site yet. It nicely rested on the top of all the SE's for its keywords. Sold it for $21,000 over a year ago.

Hyphenated domains don't really make a difference as long as the site content looks (and obviously is) authentic.

yes really a domain with hypen does not matter in SEO or seeling behaviour of the user. If he likes the product he will buy it. You need to work on the domains to get them rank :)

In terms of domain valuation, better without hyphen, but IMO hyphenated domains ARE easier to read for users and potential clients. I have a feeling they also help SEs determine the keywords in the domain.
