How important is H1?

    That's wrong I'm afraid, the H1 tag is very important. SEO is basically getting Google to understand your page and using these semantic tags are crucial to that. My own experiments with combinations of TITLE and H tags has showed me that these are invaluable. The two should both reflect the same information.

    CSS is the only standard worth following. True, many users still use IE6 but the number is falling. And you can always hack to make it work in IE 6.

    It's very important to keep styling out of the content of the page because it makes pages smaller in file size, easier to crawl and easier to change in the future. It follows nicely along from the MVC programming structures that are now being used in languages such as PHP.

    Basically, H1 tag (and h2 - h6) are there to highlight what's coming up in the following content. It should be relevent to the content and contain the keywords for your page. For you homepage, for example, the H1 tag should reflect the keywords in the TITLE:

    TITLE: Company name | Service 1, Service 2
    H1: Service 1, Service by Company Name

    This will help Google and other SE's really understand your page.
