This might be a dumb question, but how important is a domain name in SEO?

For example, if my business was xango and that appeared in all my domains...would that significantly increase my rankings? (given
i did nothing else to SEO)

    Thanks.

    Very important ...... enuff said.

My websites rank first or very high for their names, which are often keywords, without any other seo.

It can definitely help but probably only for the keyword in the domain name. You need to have more than one keyword to make the best way in SERPs. On-page content, good links with relevant anchor text will soon overtake a keyword-heavy domain name.

Its still very very important to have good keywords in the domain name. It's not everything though, but will do the SEO job much easier.

I would rather go for branding over a keyword-rich domain name, if I had to choose between one other the other. Brandable names are usually a bit more memorable imo.

It helps but it's not fundamental.

An example. A guy wrote an ebook about setting up S corporations. His domain name was "S corporation dot com". His only link (and this was really good) was from a Deloitte Touche alumni web site saying something like, "George has a web site s corporation dot com..."

His domain name and a good link from a big four accounting firm (so probably relevant) was enough to put him on the first page at google for a very competitive search term.

BTW, my s corporations site (see sig) is on first page on basis of more than a thousand links (many from relevant sites)...

Some people will link to your site with your site's names. So if you keywords are in your site's name, then that could be useful.

Also if somebody links to your page with the URL as the anchor text, e.g. h ttp://www.your-keywords-here.com/folder/page.html Google Webmaster Tools shows your site as being about your, keywords, here, com, folder, page (something like that)
So maybe you'd get minor keyword SERP juice from that??? Just a guess.

But as far as the first point goes, people tend to put the site's name in their anchor text for natural links.
