How important is a .com name?

Almost all of my domain names are .coms. I have a few domain name ideas for a niche I'm interested in which the .coms are taken. I can get a .info with name I want, or alter it and find a compromise for a .com name. Which is the better move?

For example, let's say the domain name I want - widgets.com is taken. I can get widgets.info, or I can register something like widgetscentral.com. Which do you think would be preferable?

I would almost always go for a .com or if .com is not available, I would go with .net or maybe .org. However, I wouldn't go with .info again (unless it's an informative site), as people usually do not trust .info domains and do not click them at all. .com is the king.

This is true for domain name speculation.
For developers any domain has value if you can build traffic and provide unique content.

Well I can get the .org, but again I don't know if that's preferable to getting a .com that's a bit different than the ideal domain name I'm after.

Right, I understand. Still, using my example above and assuming I'd like to register widgets.com and it's taken, but I have the choice of widgets.org or something like widgetscentral.com, which do you think is a better choice?

Because most people in the public only know .com

I think that most people recognize that .net and .org are valid domain extensions. While I consider .net as second choice, there is a growing base of people who prefer .org, as it has a non-profit connotation.

    1. Go for .info
    2. If altered name suits to you and fits to the content only then go for this.

    Good luck,

.com is nice but other TLDs work fine, my www.narutowallpaper.BIZ has 15,000 uniques per day. If it was narutowallpaper.COM is would probably still have 15,000 uniques per day but it would have cost me $1000 to buy instead of $10. ;)

My preferable is .com,.net,.org.. But actually as long as you create a good site and drag a lot of visitor any TLDs have the same opportunity to grow as a good website.

A com has a big edge over the others when it comes to brandability. When you sell the site, the presence of the .com extension can land you a few extra bucks.

Type in traffic is also a factor.

I think regardless of what .com, .org, .net or .info you are consider, there is not much impact to your search engine ranking...

To me .com is preffered over anything.N then .net or .org.

    But .info No ways.

It seems .com and .org rule. The .info can be perfectly legit, but it isn't trusted very well.

Would you prefer to have a domain keywordX.com, where X is a letter or number, or keyword.net or another extension?
