Does submitting to directories alone and getting back link alone will help your site to rank well in any search engines. Assuming the site have lot of text contents and optimized to be search engine friendly.

I ask this because I read lot of post in this forum and other webmaster forums, when someone asking how to rank well in search engine and get traffic to your site I always see the reply of most webmasters that "submit your site to directories" or "Get as much back link as you can"

Getting backlinks from directories is worthwhile, but you need to get a lot. If you can get a few backlinks from other related sites which have got high PageRank, you'll do even better. One-way links are better than reciprocal, although related reciprocals with high PR may actually be better than un-related one-way links.

    I hope that makes sense...

    Imagine this scenario :
I would rather get quality and related backlinks to your site than having unrelated sites. Directories may help a little, but on the long run you still need quality long-term backlinks.

Back links are very important to increase PR & visibility. Yss, submitting to search engines & directories will help u to get more back links. Even u can go for one way linking & reciprocal also. More back links helps u to get good traffic to ur site.

Allthough the above comments are accurate, i'd say you need the massive amounts of backlinks directories can provide you with to rank well in other search engines than Google :)

i had seen lots of site optimized in such a way that there were not even a single word written in content on which that site was on top rank in google.than i checked back links of that URL and i socked coz there were lots of good PR back links related to that keywords and that was the reason he was on top.

Building backlinks is a continuous process. And it should ideally happen over a period of time. Don't be in a hurry to build backlinks or else search engines may develop doubt.

It depends on quality of directories where you'll submit. :)

It can be anything from 0 to 100%. :)

I agree. It's about the quality of the backlinks as opposed to quantity. Of course quantity matters in the long-run, but starting out -- it's better to go after backlinks from closely related websites that are well established.

Most small directories don't provide much in terms of PR anyways.
