How important are meta tags these days?

Sorry for the noob question, but I'm trying to get better with SEO. I keep seeing articles about how meta tags don't matter anymore because google bypasses them completely. I made a website and asked for a review recently. It was pointed out to me that I didn't have any meta tag keywords or a meta tag title. So I know I probably should put that in. I was wondering if it really brings in the traffic nowadays.

simple, if your just targeting for Google, then maybe you can disregard metas but I suggest you still make one because it not hurtful at all, really. there's no big deal making out for such meta tags....

Meta tags helps to keep each page unique and also to attract visitors depending on how attracted is your description. For some Search engine they say it's disregarded but for some it's still useful.

There are many search engines other than Google out there. Personally, I think Google does care about meta tags. Besides, they can display your page Description, set the keywords and do things like telling the robots whether or not to follow hyperlinks.

As someone else mentioned, it doesn't hurt to have them and it can be very beneficial. They're not hard to set up, either.

Since Google represents nearly 60% of the search market and yahoo 30%, who cares what the others search engines think about meta tags.
